As language, perceptions and social norms change rapidly, it is becoming increasingly difficult for journalists and other communicators to figure out how to refer to people with disabilities. Even the term “disability” is not universally accepted. This style guide, which covers dozens of words and terms commonly used when referring to disability, can help. The guide was developed by the National Center on Disability and Journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and was last updated in the summer of 2021.

AfricanAmericansAgainstAlzheimer’s is the nation’s first organization dedicated to building a coordinated national response to eliminate and address Alzheimer’s disease (AD) among African Americans. The fourth leading cause of death for older African Americans, AD has a disparate impact on African Americans.

The mission is to:

• Prevent, educate, test, treat, and support individuals in communities of color that have been or will be highly impacted by AD.
• Promote brain health and healthy aging among all peoples and especially members of the black community.
• Find a cure or a way to slow, halt ,or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s and its disparate generational impact on African American families.

LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s marshalls resources and action to address the growing impact of Alzheimer’s and dementia on our nation’s 55 million Latino families. Through a network of cross-sector stakeholders, LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s spearheads strategic convening and coalition building, legislative advocacy, and culturally tailored education and brain health promotion efforts across the country.

NAPCA offers action briefs for community- based organizations working to educate and empower AAPI communities about dementia.

TimeSlips supports a global movement to bring meaning to late life through creative engagement.

Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an award-winning, evidence-based, intergenerational art-making program for people living with dementia. It was developed at Scripps Gerontology Center, an Ohio Center of Excellence at Miami University, in 2007.
People living with dementia (artists) are paired with volunteers (students, families, caregivers) who are trained to rely on imagination instead of memory and focus on remaining strengths instead of lost skills. OMA enables people living with dementia to assume new roles as artists and teachers and leave a legacy of beautiful artwork.

MUSIC & MEMORY® is a non-profit organization that helps individuals with a wide range of cognitive and physical conditions to engage with the world, ease pain, and reclaim their humanity through the use of personalized music.

By providing access and education, and by creating a network of Music & Memory certified organizations, the goal is to make the therapeutic use of personalized music a standard of care throughout the health care industry. Resources include multiple free guides on the brain-music connection.

Giving Voice, believes in the power of music to help people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia live well. Through singing, connection and wellbeing can be created. Resources include a Chorus Leader Toolkit, how to start a Chorus, and the ability to search for Choruses.

DFAWG’s mission is to promote the definition and implementation of substantive dementia-friendly protocols in U.S. airports and airlines and the harmonization of relevant air travel regulations world-wide. Resources include tools for becoming dementia friendly, training guidelines, travel tips, and tools for travel.

Arts & Minds provides meaningful art-centered programs for adults with memory loss, Alzheimer's or dementia, and their care partners in-person (in New York) and online (accessible anywhere.)

They offer free programs in English and Spanish. Programs are designed to provide positive emotional and cognitive experiences, enhance verbal and non-verbal communication, reduce isolation and build community.

Resources include a dementia friendly faith communities guide, dementia friendly worship guide, stories, and updates.

SAGE is a national advocacy and services organization for LGBT elders. Sage offers a multitude of services and supports including:
• Advocacy for LGBT Elders
• HIV & Aging Policy Action Coalition (HAPAC)
• National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, including resources related to dementia
• SAGE Hotline- 1-877-360-LGBT(5428). The SAGE LGBTQ+ Elder Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in English and Spanish, with translation in 180 languages.

A variety of resources are available including:

-Communication cards: The Communication Cards depict a wide range of daily activities and situations and can be used to prompt discussion, assist with directions, or clarify needs, etc.

- Interpreter Cards: Multilingual wallet-sized cards to assist people with requesting interpreter services.

An interactive experience that allows you to click on images to learn about challenges with dementia in common scenarios along with tips on how to help those in the community.
